| Valerie races in Balboa Yacht Club's Sunkist Winter Series, Bahia Corinthian
Yacht Club's Angleman Spring-Summer Series, the NOSA Newport-to-Ensenada
International Yacht Race, and various Newport Ocean Sailing Association
races.
Meet Valerie's CrewFred Pawell - Fred is Valerie's owner since 1972. Fred does a great job of keeping Valerie in tip-top shape for all of the races. During the race, Fred is skipper and is mostly at the helm. Fred has lots of experience with Valerie, as he has raced for many years and cruised many more years. Fred and the Pawell family have even sailed Valerie to Hawaii and back. Larry Pawell - Larry has been sailing on Valerie since he was a kid. Larry is good at any position on the boat, although he mainly works in the cockpit trimming the genoa, the main sail, or flying the spinnaker. Larry is one of our better spinnaker flyers. When Fred is not at the helm, Larry is often the skipper. Bob Hubbard - Bob has been sailing with Valerie for years. When Bob is not sailing Valerie, he is often quite successful at racing his boat, Dos Amigos, in some of the Long Beach races. He also does the Crew-of-Two Race which goes around Catalina Island. On Valerie, Bob is on the point (of the bow). Bob is very good at this position and does a great job of keeping Valerie out of trouble on the starts. On the longer races, Bob also handles some of the tactician responsibilities. Bob is a great backup at the helm, as well. Don Dogan - Don has been sailing with Valerie for years. Don works in the cockpit trimming the genoa, the main sail, or flying the spinnaker. Don can trim the main with the best of them! He is one of those people who is constantly looking at ways to trim the sail to gain a little more speed. Don is also very industrious and fixes any of the items which need minor repair and tweaks. Dale McNulty - Dale has been sailing with Valerie for a couple of years now. Dale works in the cockpit trimming the genoa, the main sail, or flying the spinnaker. Dale is our technology interface - on some of the Ensenada races Dale has sported his hand held GPS. Craig Woolston - Craig has been sailing with Valerie for a couple of years now. Craig works in the cockpit trimming the genoa, the main sail, or flying the spinnaker. Craig comes from the Hobie Cat racing world and can trim the genoa solving Valerie's "need for speed" quest. Keith Pedersen - Keith has been sailing with Valerie for the last few years. He works at the mast, raising and lowering all of the sails during the race as well as helping the genoa over on tacks so as not to get caught on the spreader stays. Bob and Keith work in concert with each other during spinnaker runs to get the pole up, spinnaker up, and the genoa down (and vice versa). Keith is also a back-up to the cockpit crew and enjoys flying the spinnaker. He is the creator and maintainer of Valerie's web pages.
Some of Valerie's Race ResultsBYC's Sunkist Series - The Sunkist Series is a four race series that starts and finishes inside the Newport harbor area. Most of the time the races require tacking outside the harbor and around a buoy, somewhere local and back. The Sunkist Series runs from November through February each year.
BCYC's Angleman Series - The Angleman Series is an eight race series that features both random leg races as well as windward/leeward buoy races. The Angleman Series runs from mid-March through August each year.
NOSA Newport-to-Ensenada International Yacht Race - The Newport-to-Ensenada race is the biggest West Coast race as far as the number of boats racing (450 - 600 boats). The race is held each year in late April.
