CHAPTER 3 - THE GATEKEEPER

The Gatekeeper is the person who calls the Substitute Teacher in the morning. This is the person who offers the Substitute a position to Teach. The Gatekeeper is one of the links between the administration and the classroom. The Gatekeeper typically gets up early in the morning, listens to the answering machine in the School District Office to learn who needs a Substitute Teacher to take the place of a Teacher who will be absent. The Gatekeeper then places calls to the Substitute in order to fill these absences. The Substitute may or may not accept the teaching position. The Gatekeeper makes calls until all positions are filled. The Gatekeeper's job is not an easy one, and the ideas in this chapter should be utilized as common courtesy towards The Gatekeeper, and the School System.

ANSWER PHONE ON THE FIRST RING

When the Gatekeeper calls you in the morning, answer the phone promptly. The Gatekeeper is a busy person, and has more Substitute positions to fill after the position offered you is filled. Don't make the Gatekeeper wait for you to pick up the phone. Answer the phone on it's first ring.

BE CHEERFUL WHEN THE GATEKEEPER CALLS AT 5:00A.M.

Keep in mind that there is a person at the other end of the phone who had to get up as early, or even earlier than you, in order to call you. That person is offering you a teaching position, and this is what you want. Your day will start off on the right foot if you are cheerful to this person.

TELL THE GATEKEEPER IN ADVANCE IF YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO TEACH

This makes the Gatekeeper happy. The Gatekeeper usually has a telephone recording machine set up for Teachers planning on being absent, and for Substitute Teachers who cannot teach any of the following days. Call in and leave a short message: leave your name, position (Substitute Teacher), and the days that you cannot make it to substitute teach. This will also mean that you will not be awakened at 5:00 in the morning by a rude ringing phone.

ALWAYS ANSWER THE PHONE, EVEN IF YOU DON'T WANT THE POSITION

The Gatekeeper is your friend. This person is providing an opportunity for you to make some money. Answer the phone on the first ring, whether or not you want the day's position or not. Keep the Gatekeeper happy.
